6. My Thoughts On 'The Secret Circle' Cancellation - ScienceFiction.com

Word came Friday night that ‘The Secret Circle’ would not be renewed for a second season. The news wasn’t a huge surprise to me – I had read that a lot of viewers didn’t come back after the winter hiatus – but it’s always strange when a show you enjoy is cancelled. Even for me, though, I thought the story lines got too dramatic too quickly. When the show began, Cassie Blake didn’t even know she was a witch and had to be taught how to access her magic, but by the end of the season she was the most powerful in her Circle, thanks to her affinity for dark magic. I would have liked to see the arc with her father John Blackwell a bit more drawn out. Cassie is pretty wary of him when he shows up (and rightfully so), but before long she’s doing everything he tells her and trusting him not only with her life, but all of her friends’ lives. It might not have seemed like such a dramatic turnaround if Blackwell had slowly wormed his way into her life. Then again, most TV shows count on cliffhangers and overly stimulating plots to bring in […]

"Nick is back in a big way," Chris Zylka warns. Way to understate the obvious! First, The Secret Circle spent time introducing us to the new coven members who would help Cassie (Britt Robertson) discover her magic, only to then kill one of the series' supposed main characters off in the fifth episode. Nick (Louis Hunter) was then replaced by his older, more brooding brother Jake (Zylka), who eventually went from working with the Witch Hunters to against them. Save These Shows: 14 bubble shows we hope will survive Now, it seems, Nick has been resurrected to track down the remaining crystal and thwart the Circle's attempts at combining them to create the sure-fire weapon against the Witch Hunters, the Crystal Skull. How will the Circle feel about Nick's return? For Jake, it may not be a happy reunion. "Jake's going to...

I think I actually groaned when I heard that the CW was making L.J. Smith's The Secret Circle into a series (a pilot for one anyway). After the total hack job they did with The Vampire Diaries (which I stopped watching when they completely deviated from the plot of the books), I was afraid because

A Circle is another name for a coven of witches who are bound and practice magic together. Circles are created for witches to increase their knowledge and power of witchcraft. Jane Blake told her granddaughter that Circles were meant to protect witches and non-witches alike. A witch's power is greatly increased when a Circle is complete. Witches are said to have been born into a Circle, like a predestined thing. The Chance Harbour Circle is formed of Six Witch Families from different generations

John Blackwell returns to Chance Harbor. This is big because he is Cassie’s father. Many thought he died in the fire sixteen years ago, but Cassie’s trip through Jake’s memories revealed that Blackwell used his family’s medallion to save himself. Ever since she discovered she comes from a line of witches with the talent of dark magic, Cassie has been obsessed about learning more about dark magic and her family. She even used the medallion to reach out and connect with her father. She wanted to know him, and then, after last week’s events, she didn’t. Well, Cassie, he didn’t get your last memo. This is a recap, so expect spoilers. Cassie decides to move out of Diana’s place because she feels she has taken advantage of Diana’s hospitality for too long. She lies to Diana, telling her that Jane, Cassie’s grandmother, is back in town. Diana tells Charles this, and he is not pleased by the news, but he has to hide how he feels. A few weeks ago, Charles altered Jane’s memory to cover up that Henry Chamberlain had died (Dawn killed him; Charles hid the body) because Dawn and Charles didn’t want people to know the Elder […]
